They say that history repeats itself. This is true in home decor and design as well. More and more we are finding homes decorated and even designed with a Mid Century Modern flair. This style can often be difficult to achieve so we have put together a small list to get you started. Here are the must haves in any mid century modern home.

If you think back to any television show from the mid century era you will always notice “the chair”. Either as the showcase piece in the living room or tucked away in an entryway or corner. A perfect accent or focal piece to any mid century modern home. However, this can’t just be any chair. Ideally it has distinctive legs and shape. Some well known pieces are the Barcelona chair with its simple x shaped base. The Egg Chair and of course the timeless Eames Chair most often seen in James Bond films but has made many cameo’s in recent movies and sitcoms as well. Dating back to 1959.

Dramatic clocks or mirrors are an essential piece of mid century modern decor. Particularly the sunburst style with either wooden finish or gold. An ideal way to accent a wall or mantle.

The most popular of wooden pieces in mid century modern decor is teak or oak. The legs are similar to what you see in the chairs. Streamlined and ideally allowing for lots of visibility underneath the piece. A common household item is the iconic side board or buffet hutch in teak. Medium wood colour is more suitable rather then lighter or darker wooden pieces.

These pieces will give you a good starting point when decorating a home or even just a room in mid century modern style. There are many stores now that sell lines of furniture pieces and decor however I recommend going on the hunt for those one or two stand alone pieces that really hold the time. Sometimes the big box store replica’s just don’t speak to the true beauty of the era.

Add a few retro accent pieces like a solid white vase with greenery and you are on your way to enjoying this beautiful style and time.
