Although 1945 is long gone its style of home design and architecture is not. Mid century modern, normally saved for notable cities such as; Palm Springs California.  Now sharing with, our beloved London Ontario.

What determines a mid century modern home?

Like The Glass House built by Philip Johnson in 1949 these homes have open floor plans and giant sliding glass doors. Geometric lines and flat roofs are also very common in this style of homes. Changes in elevation are also common as are integrations with nature such as greenery introduced to the interior of the home as well as mixed woods.

Various neighbourhoods in the City of London have been noticed for mid century architecture taking shape. Most notably: those created by Millstone Homes of London in areas such as The Alcove in Byron. A family oriented neighbourhood close to Boler Mountain.

The homes here taking on most of the mid century flat lines and style while other  neighbourhoods in  Southwest and North London also by Millstone Homes have a mix of Mid-Century and West Coast style that is commonly found in Vancouver neighbourhoods.

The description of a west coast style home is very similar to that of the mid century modern in that this design also favors flat roofs and natural elements. In these homes you will also find generous exterior over hangs and open floor plans. The west coast style of architecture comes in around the same time frame being built between, 1945-1975.

All of which are considered “After War” where families began to focus on health and happiness and took this focus in how they built their homes. In traditional homes windows are small and difficult for children to see out of. It is said that larger windows were created to allow for the children to see outside and want to be out there to enjoy all it had to offer. As well the open floor plans kept the families together.

Although the west coast and mid century styles found in Millstone Homes carry from the exterior to the interior of the homes it is also noted that some of the interior of the homes take on a bit of a Scandinavian influence.

Particularly with decor and, some finishes. With organic elements such as: wood or cloth. Slatted walls, or storage as furniture.

Some may say that you either love these designs and decor or you hate them. However it is very refreshing to find that builders and creators are making bold moves to bring back and further enhance the architectural beauty these designs and our precious city has to offer.
